Ahead of the planned mass testing, shelves have been emptied in shops and supermarkets over panic-buying across the city. Asylum seekers and refugees receive a monthly government subsidy of HK$1,200 (US$154) in food cards, which can only be used at one designated supermarket. NGO Christian Action, based in Hong Kong’s Chungking Mansions, received an overwhelming response from its Facebook appeal, with people from all walks of life donating various supplies, from food to Covid-19 self-test kits.
